Philosophy of Parimukti Advanced Teacher Training (YA300)
In the advanced training, we proceed to experiencing and exploring the most subtle; from the physical body (asanas / body postures) to the energy body, to the mind. We continue to follow the tradition of Krishnamacharya, which is reflected in the fact that the asana practice is mostly in the Hatha Yoga tradition and the principles of Yin and Yang.
If you were most comfortable teaching one style of class only, in this training we are opening up the possibilities. You will deepen your anatomical, physiological and energetic knowledge, which you will learn to apply practically in a Yin and Yang Class. You’ll study and understand the differences of yoga with a ‘Yang Character’ (Hatha and Vinyasa poses & practise) and yoga with a ‘Yin character’ (Yin and Restorative poses & practise).
Besides the physical practice you will explore the energetic, emotional and mind aspects of a yoga practice. Therefore, you’ll study yoga philosophy in depth. The Patanjali Yoga Sutras, the basic principles of Taoism, Chinese Medicine and Chakra Theory will be explored.
In this training we acknowledge the unique individuality of bodily and mental constitution. To be able to recognize and understand these subtle processes you’ll study Ayurveda in depth. Also, you will deepen your understanding of what meditation is, from a neuroscience approach. This knowledge will enable you to offer your future students greater support during their yoga and meditation practice.
The 300 hours Parimukti Advanced Teacher Training offers insight into your physical, emotional, mental and energetic body, enabling you to explore the endless possibilities of life and your own personal path.
During this 6 weeks Intensive Program, you will immerse yourself fully into the process of yoga, experiencing directly what it is like to live and practice full-time. You will learn about the basic Daoist principles of Yin and Yang Yoga and practise and explore yoga with a ‘Yang Character’ (Hatha and Vinyasa poses & practise) and yoga with a ‘Yin character’ (Yin and Restorative poses & practise).
All aspects of yoga practice like kriyas (cleansing techniques), asana, breath awareness, pranayamas, visualization, mantra and meditation will be covered by the program, which is further divided into the following themes:
ASANA (LED & SELF-PRACTISE)
Your practice is your foundation, your real teacher. In the training, you will commit to practicing daily asana, pranayama, kriya and meditation. What you practice, you will understand. What you understand, you will be able to teach.
Therefore, not all asana classes in this training will be led-classes. Once a week you’ll be encouraged to practice a self designed sequence in the morning sessions, which gives you a deeper insight into your needs, aspirations and constitution.
Experimenting and reflecting on both your personal meditation, yoga practice and teachings will be continuously encouraged.
In these teachings, you’ll deepen your knowledge of a yang practise, which is mainly focused on flexibility of the muscles. The yang part of the training is focused in the following modules:
Module 1: Creative and intelligent sequencing
In this module you’ll learn and teach sequencing templates based on the Vinyasa Krama system as taught by Sri Krishnamacharya, the father of modern Vinyasa Yoga. The system of Vinyasa Krama is based on safe and intelligent sequencing within the five families of asanas. The logic behind this system is based on understanding the energetic lines and key actions of the yoga poses. Within each family of asanas we will map different pathways for creative sequencing as well as the options and modifications for students of different levels or abilities.
You will learn to observe and cue the key actions of asanas in their different kramas (stages) so you will be able to assist and encourage your students in a safe and effective way. We will practice and gain confidence with offering effective hands-on adjustments to help your students deepen their practice and embody the fullest expression of their yoga poses.
Module 2: The art of energetic balancing
In the “Art of Energetic Balancing” you will explore different ways of finding the center in your body through energetic awareness and alignment. From the system of yoga the result should always be that we create length and space in the body. When you find the center in the body, your mind will follow along. To achieve this we use muscle energy and core stability to protect the joints.
Also, we will continue exploring the influence of the seven chakras, the five elements, the three gunas and the five layers, or koshas. Diving deeper into study and integration on this level is an opportunity for you to gain access to deeper layers of your own practice and to develop refined teaching skills. Guidelines are offered for creating deeply nourishing and invigorating Hatha and Vinyasa classes based on a specific energetic activation, chakra or element.
In these teachings, you’ll deepen your knowledge of a yin practise, which is mainly focused on relaxing the muscles. The yin part of the training is divided in the following modules:
Module 3: Yin Yoga
Yin yoga is a more quiet practice which taps into and fosters our more feminine (yin) energy. Thus it is a nice addition to a more dynamic yoga style of practice, which is characterised by its masculine (yang) energy. The sitting and supine yin postures have an expansive effect and make the spine, hip joints, pelvis and lower back more supple. It stimulates the vital energy (prana/chi) that flows through the fascia. This nurtures, balances and heals our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Also, a yin practice can help you cultivate more yin qualities in your daily life, enhancing the flow of life and becoming more skilful in the ‘art of letting go’.
In this module you will discover what Yin Yoga is,and how Yin Yoga developed through modern and ancient wisdom. We will discuss the differences and similarities between Yin Yoga and other styles of yoga practice. You will discover how we can influence mobility of the joints and tissues (yin), rather than focusing on the flexibility of the muscles (yang) around a specifica area of the body.
We will explore a variety of yin poses (mainly on the floor) to experience and learn their function and effect on the human systems and develop skills to teach and to modify each posture to fit and support any individual student. You will practice sequencing, learn how to use props, and how to adjust others in yin postures.
Module 4: Restorative Yoga
Restorative yoga is becoming increasingly popular, amongst beginner as well as advanced yoga students, as a way to experience true relaxation. As stress and tension are released, healing and upliftment are promoted in body, heart, and mind.
In this module you will explore how to sequence routines and give instruction on breathing, alignment, cautions and contraindications. You will appreciate the importance of knowing how to assist and adjust your students both carefully and efficiently. In restorative yoga we use a wide range of props like bolsters, pillows, blankets, chairs, straps and blocks to help your students achieve perfect poses. The main purpose of props is to provide support for your body when you are stretching or relaxing. You’ll learn to use the right size of props for specific poses
We guide you to become familiar with modifications and variations that focus on specific physical and mental tensions needed for students with special conditions. Also we will observe common complaints students experience in several restorative poses and offer students alternate ways to practice more safely and comfortably.
You will continue/start a personal practice of advanced pranayama to incorporate into your daily practice. At the end of the program you will have integrated these practices and, thus, will be able to incorporate advanced pranayama into your teaching.
Kriyas are cleansing and purification practices. You will learn a selection of advanced, powerful kriya techniques (such as Uddiyana kriya, Nauli, Agni Sara), and incorporate them into your daily practice routine.
We will continue studying different meditation techniques like vipassana, dance meditations, dynamic meditations, buddhist meditations, etc. You will deepen your understanding of what meditation is, and understand how yoga and meditation can heal from a neuroscience perspective.
One day a week, the training will be in Mouna: silence. It is a powerful tool to go beyond the surface – beyond names and forms, social, cultural or psychological boundaries. You will receive teachings and practices silently, allowing yourself to let go of critical thinking, questions and other habits of the mind. You will observe different patterns that may arise, and reach a deeper part of yourself. Your teachers will support you in a silent way, and the teachings itself will empower you with strength to go deeper within the process of Yoga.
You will study the subtle energetic bodies, from Taoist and Hatha Yoga view. You will learn and experience how the energy in the body works, and how the energy body and mind are intimately connected.
Also we will study:
Prana versus Qi/Chi,
Nadis versus Meridians,
Chakras versus Dantiens,
Mudras, Bandhas, Vayus and Koshas.
In this module you learn about the functional anatomy and physiology of the organs, muscles, the brain, spinal cord, and glands. You gain insight in the anatomy and physiology of the human body and how skeletal variation is key to the fact that a person either experiences tension or compression in a yoga posture.
You’ll learn to effectively adjust your students on an individual level, both verbally as well as hands-on. With this knowledge you will be able to create private and group classes suited to your students physical, energetic and mental needs.
AYURVEDA & NUTRITION
This module prepares you to integrate the wisdom of Ayurveda in your own life, in your yoga classes and to give personal advice to students. You will gain understanding of our three doshas, and discover your own natural born constitution (prakriti) and your current imbalance (vikriti). Also you’ll learn how to determine someone’s dosha and know the most important ways of healing any imbalance. You start to develop your ‘Ayurvedic Eye’ to see things from the Ayurvedic perspective. This will bring more balance in your life, in your yoga-practice and in guiding students. Additionally, we study how to use nutrition to adjust to our own natural born constitution.
ART OF TEACHING AND ADJUSTING
To be able to teach creative and safe Yin and/or Yang yoga classes, each training block will include intensive practices; involving teaching, sequencing, adjusting and the usage of props. The progress of your practice will be supported with guidance.
This module is an interactive program. You will be challenged to find your own understanding of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, by reading different translations and interpretations. We gain deeper insight of the text and ourselves by sharing personal findings and discoveries. You will read the Yoga Sutras in English and Sanskrit. We will chant some sutras to practice our pronunciation. Beside the Sutras, the basic principles of Taoism as written in the Tao Te Ching will be explored.
MANTRA & SOUND HEALING
In this module we continue practicing Bhakti Yoga, learning and practicing mantras. We will integrate sound and vibrations, which work on the human system. You will understand by experience how sound can positively charge oneself and the environment. It can help to develop self-awareness, physical and emotional healing, personal growth and strengthen relationships.

To guarantee a suitable level of experience for all students participating in the Advanced Studies, we ask you to meet the following requirements before applying for this program:
- You have successfully completed a 200-hrs yoga teacher training
- You have an established self-practice
- You have at least 1 year teaching experience (preferably including a group of people who normally not get the opportunity to experience any sort of yoga – Karma Yoga community Service Project.
We welcome graduates from all Yoga Alliance registered 200-hour trainings into the Advanced Studies. If your previous training was not recognized by Yoga Alliance, but you meet the other requirements please do get in touch with us to discuss your situation further.

The Advance Yoga Teacher Training will give you an increased understanding and acceptance of yourself (as a teacher) and the direction of your career. You’ll become even more aware of your own unique presence, energy, message and teaching style(s).
- You’ll be able to teach Yoga with a ‘Yang Character’ (Hatha and Vinyasa poses & practise) and yoga with a ‘Yin character’(Yin and Restorative poses & practise).
- You’ll have an expanded knowledge of Yang, Yin and Restorative yoga postures: Sanskrit and English names, alignment, benefits and contra indications
- You’ll expand your instruction and adjusting tools. Verbally, hands-on and using props like bolsters, cushions, blocks, straps
- You’ll be able to identify individual needs of your students in asana, pranayama and meditation and you know how to guide them for a more profound experience
- You’ll have a solid foundation in pranayama practice and being able to guide and instruct the pranayama that fits your particular group
- You’ll have a deep knowledge of breath-work and its effect on health and happiness
- You’ll have a solid understanding of the underlaying philosophy and context in which Yang and Yin schools of yoga asana developed
- You’ll be able to teach and instruct various meditation techniques
- You’ll be able to determining someone’s Dosha and you know the most important ways of healing any imbalance
- An understanding of different chakras and individual treatment according to them
This program is registered with the American Yoga Alliance (YA), and meets their standards at the 300 hours level. Upon the completion of this program, (together with your Basic Training certificate) you will be able to register as a Yoga Alliance 500-hour certified teacher – one of the highest and widely recognised teaching certifications in the field of yoga.
